Anthony Patch, Joe Joseph & I go over the upcoming Lead-Lead collisions that are to occur at CERN over the coming weeks.
This will be the culmination of their collisions for 2015 and will see the highest energy levels and temperatures ever produced at the particle accelerator in Geneva.
We go over the public face of CERN and what they put out for public consumption versus the reality of billions of ions of Lead colliding constantly at next to the speed of light. This time the collisions are head on as opposed to glancing blows, and the ions or lead are heavier in mass than the previous protons used so far.
Tony goes over some of the signs to look out for around the planet during the collision period, including increased earthquakes and potentially more of those strange “trumpet” sounds from the sky.
It’s the energy that is set to be produced that is the key thing to understand. CERN will tell you there is nothing to worry about, but they use the example of one collision. We explain how these collisions multiply the value given by CERN to get a true understanding of the astronomical levels involved.
The accelerator is ramping up as we speak, ahead of the Lead-Lead collisions that are set to begin on Monday 23rd November.
