So-called assault weapons

A Connecticut newspaper on Monday published an editorial applauding a recent federal appeals court decision upholding a ban in that state on military-style “assault weapons” and large-capacity magazines.

The Hartford Courant called the October decision by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Connecticut Citizens’ Defense League v. Malloy a “common sense ban” and rejected gun rights advocates’ claims that such a restriction would infringe on their right to self-defense, as D.C. v Heller established.

“The Second Amendment doesn’t allow arming oneself to the teeth with no restrictions,” reads the editorial.

The paper further criticized congressional leaders, calling them “cowards” for opposing national gun control measures.

In a joint opinion, the court also held in New York State Rifle and Pistol Assoc., Inc. v. Cuomo that laws banning similar firearms in New York were constitutional.

Both cases stemmed from legislation passed in both states following the December 2012 mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.
