And the winner is… drum roll please… The battle over which aerospace company was to be awarded the contract for the new B-2 Stealth Bomber is finally over, with Northrup Grumman being the victor. Was their ad in last years Super Bowl (shown below) at least partially responsible? Perhaps it was. One thing is clear though, defense contractors have begun to model their presentation from what they were able to learn from Steve Jobs. First, take a look at the new B-2 Bomber in the promotional video below. The first video below in particular has no sound, but the aircraft is perfect in every way, so why let noise mess up the video! I’m sure this is what 22-Year-Old TV Anchor Tomi Lehran is Referring to in the Telecast Where She Annihilates Obama’s Pathetic Middle East Policy. The aircraft really is an artistic masterpiece! That is, as long as it’s not dropping bombs where you live.
With the announcement of who will build the Long Range Strike Bomber (LRS-B) seemingly imminent, it is interesting that Northrop Grumman, the builder of the famed B-2 Stealth Bomber, just released this incredible high-definition footage of their legendary flying wing design weaving through the skies gracefully.

This incredible imagery that looks to be shot over the deserts of the America’s Southwest, shows all the different angles of the B-2, an aircraft that seemingly changes its look totally depending on what aspect you view it from. Even the back of the jet, an area that the USAF has been very sensitive about photographing as of late, is showcased brilliantly.
The timing of the video is extremely interesting. Maybe Northrop Grumman, who has used its marketing abilities to the max during this high-stakes bomber contract competition, is just reminding us one more time who has actually built and maintained the world’s only known combat-proven stealth bomber and manned flying-wing aircraft.
In comparison, Nothrop Grumman’s opponents, a consortium of Boeing and Lockheed Martin, have been much quieter when it comes to publicly winning support for their ability to build America’s next bomber.
Regardless of this intense but shadowy competition, it is amazing to think that in the not so distant future, the B-2 Spirit, even though it will remain in service for decades to come, will be America’s “old stealth bomber.”
This will very well be a true statement, but boy does the design still look amazingly otherworldly.
So, why did the government ultimately choose Northrop Grumman, over fellow defense contractors Lockheed or Boeing? With all the mistakes Lockheed has experienced (even by U.S. government standards), in their failure to produce a working aircraft at the price they quoted, it’s understandable why the Pentagon AND the America people are pissed. For years now, there has been a very public lashing of the F-35 program, and numerous stories on its many faults have made to the press. Did Northrup Grumman win the bid because they took out a fancy advertising slot in last years Super Bowl? Check out the ad below:

The real reason Northrup Grumman won probably has a lot more to do with them learning from the mistakes of companies like Lockheed! The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter for example, was billed as what would be the most advanced aircraft in the world by far, with no equal. It was designed to meet the needs of the Air Force, Navy, Marines, and even the British Royal Navy. Each branch required a stealthy ground attack fighter, so to save costs, there was to be only ONE frame that met the overall needs of each branch. With the idea of having just one aircraft, competition between Lockheed, Northrop Grumman, and Boeing reached epic proportions. When it was first designed, the F-35 was designed to replace the Harrier for the Marine Corps, the FA-18 for the Navy, and the F-16 and A-10 for the Air Force.

Because with new aircraft development times lasting multiple decades, and the aircraft’s life cycle being stretched out many decades after that, the competition may not get a chance at another similar contract for half a century. By then, the guys who won the last contract will be far ahead in know-how, much of it gained on the DoD’s dime, than the ruins of what was ‘the competition’ long ago. So today, as budgets are under heavy strain, super-sized defense programs that promise many billions (or in the case of the F-35, trillions) of dollars in revenue over their life span are seen as a lifeline to future relevance as much as just another piece of a company’s portfolio.
The ENTIRE premise of the new aircraft was increased efficiency. One frame meant lower costs, increased performance, and more room to hold munitions. Arguably the single biggest reason for the utter failure of the F-35 so far has been how far each branches’ aircraft has morphed away from the original design. The further each branch gets from the original design, the more cost over-runs, and the more problems that have been encountered. The video below illustrates both how truly awesome the aircraft would be if it functioned properly. but also why it’s had so many problems… because of all the changes!

The American people are tired of mistakes, and they are tired of excuses. No military weapon in history will come CLOSE to making the financial MESS the F-35 has. What was once also billed as a $100 Billion program, has ballooned into a $400 Billion program and it is still years away from being functional. You know what works on it? The pilot helmets. Too bad they cost $400,000 each, contributing to what will ultimately be over a $1 TRILLION dollar program by the time it’s operational.
About the Helmets, USA Today Reports:
When the joint strike fighter, the F-35 Lightning II, finally takes to the skies on its first official mission, it will be one of the most advanced and one of the most expensive planes ever.
And the pilots flying the aircraft will be wearing the most advanced and most expensive helmet ever.
The helmet will give pilots quicker access to the information they need to see and has special cameras to “see” through the bottom of the plane.
Foxtrot Alpha Sums Up The F-35 Problem Northrup Grumman Better Avoid:
The F-35 in particular has shocked the defense industry into a new reality. Beyond its merits and failings, the F-35 aims to replace the majority of tactical fighters in the U.S. inventory with one type, sold by one contractor. Not only does this mean that there will be no future fighter aircraft competitions potentially for decades, but it also means all those sustainment and upgrade dollars will be migrating away from a diversified fleet supported by many manufacturers and right into the pockets of a single major contractor.
This means they are going to do what is necessary not just to win a contract, but to keep that contract solvent for the many years it takes for it to come to fruition and for the aircraft ordered to actually enter service in substantial numbers. For these manufacturers, getting both Congress and the public on your side is now an element of this ‘total warfare’ approach to winning market share for decades to come and possibly shuttering some of your historical competitors in the process.
DID GOVERNMENT MAKE THE BEST CHOICE WITH NORTHROP GRUMMAN?
THE B-52 IS NO STRANGER TO CONTROVERSY – SIMILAR TO THE F-35!
Check out this video on the history of the B-2 before you answer!
The Northrop (later Northrop Grumman) B-2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber, is an American heavy strategic bomber, featuring low observable stealth technology designed for penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses; it is a flying wing design with a crew of two. The bomber can deploy both conventional and thermonuclear weapons, such as eighty 500 lb (230 kg)-class (Mk 82) JDAM Global Positioning System-guided bombs, or sixteen 2,400 lb (1,100 kg) B83 nuclear bombs. The B-2 is the only acknowledged aircraft that can carry large air-to-surface standoff weapons in a stealth configuration.
