The Los Angeles Unified School District closed all schools down on Tuesday after “a very specific threat” was received by multiple board members via email. The campus police notified the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force began attempting to vet the seriousness of the threat.

No specific school was mentioned by name, but reportedly many of the schools were threatened so all were locked down, classes were canceled, and students were sent home. The threatening email apparently contained reference to a number of packages and backpacks, in addition to assault rifles, pistols, and explosive devices.

Although the email was routed through Germany, authorities believe it originated in or near the U.S.

While New York City schools also reportedly received almost the exact same threat, authorities there have announced they believe it to be a hoax.
