Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is to face trial over her role in a pay-out of some 400million euros to a French businessman.
The IMF chief is being accused of negligence in the case of Bernard Tapie, who received £318million in government compensation when she was France's finance minister.
Critics say the 2008 payment was 'over generous'. La Garde has previously said the allegations are 'totally without merit'.
The decision to pursue Lagarde came despite the prosecutor's recommendation in September that investigations be dropped against her.
Lagarde's lawyer, Yves Repiquet, said this latest unexpected move was 'incomprehensible'.
