If you knew that cyanide was found in common mass market products, at any dose, would you consume them? Probably not, correct? Well then, how do you feel about a chemical 4 times more toxic than cyanide? Would you consume that intentionally, or avoid it?
Enter the strange case of sodium selenate, a byproduct of copper metal refining, and which is actually proudly listed as a “nutrient” on the labels of many mass market products, presumably as a key selling-point!
Forgive us for the redundancy here, but it is 4 times more lethal than sodium cyanide. It only takes .4 milligrams (that’s 250 micrograms, or 250 millionths of a gram!) to kill 50% of the rats who are made to ingest it. A human, weighing 275 times more than a rat, has a 50% chance of dying if consuming 108 milligrams of the stuff!
How much (or little) is this human-lethal dose of 108 milligrams? That is, how do we visualize or draw real-world comparisons with a quantity this small?
An average size grain of sand weighs approximately 10 milligrams.1 In the picture above are circumscribed 11 grains of sand on the top portion of this person’s finger, which while barely visible, weigh approximately 110 milligrams counted together. Is it really possible that a dose of sodium selenate that small could kill a grown man or woman?
You can do the calculations yourself by using the table below. Click on the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) and take a look at the LD50 listed. Then convert the information into a form applicable to humans.

What products use sodium selenate or selenite? Here is a short list:
1) Pet foods, including “organic” brands such as Newman’s Own.
2) Selenium supplements, such as Twin Lab’s “Sodium Selenite,” Vitamin Research Products’ “Selenium.”
3) Veterinary vitamins
4) Nutrition Shakes, e.g. Kids Essentials, Nestle’s Nutrament
5) Infant Formula, Sam’s Club “Simply Right,” Enfamil’s “Premium Infant Formula Powder.”
6) Multi-vitamins such as Centrum (Pfizer) and One-A-Day (Bayer) brand vitamins, which sell millions of bottles a month.

… and the amount of selenate or selenite in these products is…? How worried am I supposed to be, does one serving of these products contain half the LD50 or perhaps only one thousandth?
well, selenium is a trace element but also a poison.
Many substances that our body needs in microdoses will be poisonous in overdoses.
I dont know how much selenium is in one pill of “Centrum” multivitamin but I am sure that if one swallowed, with the intention to harm himself, thirty or more of those pills it would be other substances that would poison him, not the selenium. Vitamin A for example: if overdosed, it severely harms the skin and mucous membranes.
One should not listen to one-sided horror tales like the article above but take them as an opportnity to inform oneself how much selenium is in one pill of “Centrum”, for example, and how much of it is is in normal foodstuff, and how high is the daily dietary allowance of selenium.
such data are found in books and internet portals that give detailed info about the composition of nutrients. We in Germany, for example, have the “Graefe + Unzer Große Ernährungstabelle” where one will find also the exact content of Vitamin K, Salicylate, and other even more special substances in many foods.
I got to remark here that the way people deal with toxicity issues is often not too reasonable. For example, many readers would start worrying about selenium in their food after reading the article above (at least without reading my comment additionally – GRIN), but many of these same people dont worry about, for example, their regular alcohol intake, their constant use of potentially poisonous household chemicals and disinfectants, as “Klorox”, or their regular contact with fuel and petrochemical lubricants when repairing and cleaning their cars. Remove the BIG dangers from your daily lives before thinking of the little ones, please!
Other readers here, who use alternative medicine, do not take alcohol or drugs and do not use Klorox and similar things, feeling and partially really being more reasonable thus than the “average American”, are not free of such irrationalities too. For example if they fall for the “MMS” hoax! MMS, that alleged wonder compound, is nothing else than a sort of – believe it or not, it is true – Chlorine bleach, similar to Klorox! And it already caused poisonings in many cases, both of children and adults. But as it is sold under the label of being an alternative medicine, there still are many naive people who think it to be harmless. Similar things could be said about Laetrile, also called Vitamin B 17; this substance, so much lauded as an alternative cancer cure, is not a vitamin but a cyanide compound that can be very poisonous if overdosed.
So whatever you intend to swallow for your health and fitness, check first whether it is really harmless – dont blindly believe the ads, not even in the realm of Alternative Medicine.
And if you dont feel good with a food supplement, a dietary or exercise recommendation, or a medication,
talk frankly about it to your physician, alternative healer, counselor, or whoever adviced you to take or perform it,
and if there are no really serious reasons
to keep using some kind of exercise, meditation, diet, vitamin, or medicine, although you dont feel good with it,
discontinue its use!
I say this because I am against hoax and snake-oil selling
wherever I meet with it, both in Universitary and in so-called Complementary Medicine,
and against blind and potentially self-harming obedience of “patients” toward “medical professionals” of any kind.
