Scenes from McCain’s patheticly low turnout 2016 campaign kickoff
Mitt Romney repaid his debt to John McCain Saturday at Dobson High School in Mesa — where Romney, not McCain — was more likely to pull in the needed crowd for the aged senator’s bid for another 6-year term. McCain will be 80 by Election Day — you do the math.
The puny turnout for this performance was laughably overestimated at nearing 1,000 by McCain’s sycophantic Arizona Republic reporter Dan Nowicki. Local media outlets accurately reported the crowd was only about 300. See the photo and topical cartoon here. When Donald Trump came to Phoenix in the scorching heat of July, over 5,000 turned out. Ben Carson drew an estimated crowd of 12,000 in August.
Romney wore the prescribed uniform of the day, navy blazer and tie-less open collar blue shirt, with a slight stripe deviation. He, McCain and Jeff Flake could have passed for a Golden Oldies era trio seen on late night TV ads hawking cassette sales to senior citizen insomniacs. Several women seated nearby were musing over hair: Romney’s over-dyed tresses, Flake’s bleach highlighted locks, and McCain’s white comb-over, which a guy with them pointed to as one of the few consistent things about him.
Arizona’s Republican congressional delegation, all running for reelection wisely kept their distance.
Romney disputed rumors that he might get into the 2016 presidential race, and dutifully mentioned candidates he could support, who “I think would be terrific presidents, whether it’s Jeb Bush or Chris Christie or Marco Rubio or Lindsey Graham or Carly Fiorina. The list goes on and on.” Romney, who lost the presidential race to Obama in 2012, obviously has a partiality for single digit candidates.
Pointedly omitted from his list was conservative Sen. Ted Cruz, who McCain has openly insulted and called a “Wacko bird.” Breitbart’s Tony Lee reports on McCain’s sarcastic comments about Cruz in response to a question by Fox News host Martha MacCallum. McCain’s brazen animus holds little sway with Iowa voters. Bloomberg reports Cruz has surged ahead by 31 percent to become the front-runner in the campaign for the Iowa Feb. 1 caucuses, opening an impressive lead over Donald Trump.
John McCain has hit the depths of Number Six on Roll Call’s roster of the 10 most vulnerable U.S. senators. He’s has been in D.C. doing his dirty work (video) since 1982.
“There are few Republicans who have betrayed our conservative principles more than John McCain,” is how Senate Conservatives Fund describes John McCain on a page titled, Replace John McCain.
It’s time to do it.
