~~WITHOUT PROTECTION, THERE WILL BE NO SAFE PLACE.
The state of California has some of the most restrictive laws on the sale, possession and use of firearms and ammunition in the nation. Effective in 2005, it became illegal to sell or own a .50 CMB caliber semi-automatic rifle and magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Anyone who wants to purchase a firearm must fill out an application that is sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) which performs a background check on the buyer.
* All sales (including private party transfers) must be through a licensed firearms dealer and all dealers must be “California legal” by being listed on the states Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale. (“Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale – Firearms Division – California Dept. of Justice – Office of the Attorney General”. Certguns.doj.ca.gov. 2001-01-01. Retrieved February 18, 2015.”)
* All firearm sales are recorded by the state. “As of January 1, 2014 Long gun serial numbers are now recorded, where as previously only the sale was recorded.”
* “California has a ten (10) day waiting period for all firearm purchases, transfers, and private sales which must be conducted through a federal and state firearm license holder. That is, upon purchase, the purchaser must wait 10 days after the purchase before the firearm is released to the owner.”
* “Firearm purchases require a Firearm Safety Certificate and proof of residency unless the individual purchasing the firearm is active duty military or a peace officer under Penal Code Section 830. Military reservists must still acquire a Firearm Safety Certificate and proof of residency in order to purchase a firearm.”
* It is “illegal to possess, import, or purchase assault weapons and .50 BMG rifles, unless such weapons were acquired by the owner prior to June 1, 1989. While California’s Assault Weapons Ban does allow individuals to obtain, transport or possess banned weapons with permission from the DOJ, the DOJ generally does not grant such permission to ordinary citizens.”
* “Possession of automatic weapons or short-barreled shotguns or rifles prohibited without DOJ “Dangerous Weapons Permit”; permission rarely granted outside of film industry.
In light of the San Bernardino “terrorist attack”, does this not beg the question how two 15 year citizens (regardless of race or religion) obtained semi-automatic weapons in the first place? Especially given the number of hoops one must go through in the state of California to purchase a mere handgun? What dealer sold these illegal semi-automatic weapons to these people and why is the dealer not accountable? If the supposed “terrorists” obtained them illegally, does that not tell us that no number of restrictions, limitations, background checks or legalities will prevent criminals from obtaining guns? Does this not make it perfectly clear that “criminals” and “terrorists” don’t obey the laws to begin with and that is why they are defined as such? Does this not tell us that MORE laws or outright banning will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns, rather, it will only prevent the population from protecting themselves?
Despite the current firearm laws in California (again, some of the strictest in the nation)
those laws failed to ensure safety in San Bernardino!
More of the same will only beget more of the same.
Insanity: continuing to doing the same things expecting different results.
There have been mass shootings in this country for decades. However, they have been on the uptick despite the enactment of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1994. While the 90′s were at an all time high of 42 within a decade, that is an average of 4 per year. Between 2000-2013 there are now an average of 53.3 mass shootings per year! According to a FOX News article, the FBI reported a dramatic increase of 160 mass shootings in those three years.
“WASHINGTON – The number of shootings in which a gunman wounds or kills multiple people has increased dramatically in recent years, with the majority of attacks in the last decade occurring at a business or a school, according to an FBI report released Wednesday.
The study focused on 160 “active shooter incidents” between 2000 and 2013. Those are typically defined as cases in which a gunman in an attack shoots or attempts to shoot people in a populated area.”
Mass shootings in America by decade:
1900′s – 0, 1910′s – 2, 1920′s – 2, 1930′s – 9, 1940′s – 8, 1950′s – 1,
1960′s – 6, 1970′s – 13, 1980′s – 32, 1990′s – 42, 2000′s – 28,
2010 through 2012 -160 (according to FBI report)
Now, let’s look at the past 3 years:
2013 – 363
2014 – 336
2015 (to date) – 353
1052 MASS SHOOTINGS IN THREE YEARS!
In November 2007 with renewed interest in preventing people who are mentally ill from purchasing guns, the Justice Department reports that the FBI’s Mental Defective File, which lists people prohibited from buying guns, has ballooned from 175,000 names in June to nearly 400,000. Soon following on Jan. 8, 2008, President Bush signs a rare piece of bipartisan gun-control legislation aimed at keeping people who are severely mentally ill from purchasing guns.
Despite, stronger restrictions, background checks and stronger laws, they have done little to provide safety and prevent mass shootings and the numbers prove it. If these measures were the answer, the incidents would have drastically diminished. The truth of the matter is, law abiding citizens follow the criteria required to responsibly own firearms – we are not the problem. Our leaders are approaching this matter as if to treat cancer with a Band-Aid. The increase of mass shootings alone is a clear indication that their methodology of treating the symptoms is never going to cure the cause. The cause being the ability to obtain weapons ILLEGALLY. As long as there is a black market which is motivated by the all mighty dollar, we will continue to bear witness to such incidents as mass shootings. Self-protection will prove to be the ONLY answer. It may not guarantee your survival but it will at worst level the playing field.
In my opinion, the mere suggestion that our government can protect us and keep us safe is gut-wrenching. Nothing could be further from the truth. Isn’t that painfully obvious? To the well informed, we recognize this is a desperate attempt at a gun-grab for reasons I won’t expound on right now. To those who still waiver on the idea that you are better protected without a firearm than you are by those who legally obtain them, I suggest you do some homework and take a good hard look at the evidence. In every country where guns have been banned, it has driven the black market sales of guns whereby criminals can obtain them without complication and crime has surged. In our own country, the mere implementation of stronger requirements to legally own a firearm has only resulted in increased shootings not a reduction of the ability to obtain them.
Criminals are more deterred when they believe they are at risk of getting shot instead. People become victims because they are unable to defend themselves. The police won’t be on the scene until it’s too late. Is your life as valuable as the criminals, if not more so? If so, doesn’t it make sense to protect your own right to life? If you’re waiting on your government or civil servants to do the job, you will have waited too late!
