Google recently updated how it assesses the quality of search engine results. This has left the operators of “how-to” web sites feeling the effects. Surprisingly, Yahoo! Answers was hit the hardest with a drop of 10.9% or 45 million organic searches. The news, however, wasn’t completely grim for owners of “how-to” sites; many reported that they actually benefitted from the update.
So what was it about the content on these sites that set them apart from the ones that plummeted in ratings following the update? The answer is quality. Many of the sites that benefitted from the “phantom” update provided quality user-generated content and had strict quality control rules in place. For instance, if a user responded to a question with blatant self-promotion, it was rightfully flagged as spam and quickly removed.
