Not a week goes by without the Syrian conflict taking us another step towards World War Three. There’s no way that Western interests can operate in Syria alongside Russian interests, without them butting heads in some capacity. And time after time, we’ve seen what happens when these conflicting global interest collide in the region. People die, like the unfortunate Russian pilot who was killed last month, and both sides of the conflict come a little closer to fighting each other without the benefit of their proxies.

As they say in the westerns, it’s a small town, and it isn’t big enough for both of them. In this case however, we’re not dealing with two drunken gunslingers. These are nuclear armed superpowers who refuse to back down. If the conflict continues to escalate, the results could be devastating.

This week may have seen one of worst provocations to date. If true, it would completely change the nature of the conflict. Syria has just accused our military of bombing their soldiers.

Damascus has labelled as an “act of aggression” the US-led coalition’s missile strike which killed three Syrian soldiers at an army base in the Deir ez Zor province.

On top of the fatalities, 13 personnel were injured and a number of military vehicles were destroyed when warplanes fired nine missiles at the Saeqa military camp.

The incident is the first of its kind since the coalition started to bomb Syrian territory more than a year ago, though the US-led alliance continues to deny it carried out the airstrike.

“Syria strongly condemns the act of aggression by the US-led coalition that contradicts the UN Charter on goals and principles. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent letters to the UN Secretary General and the UN Security Council,” Syria’s SANA news agency quoted the country’s foreign ministry as saying.

US officials have of course denied those claims, and have said that they haven’t conducted any airstrikes in the province where the bombing took place. They’ve instead suggested that Russia bombed the Syrian troops.

That’s kind of strange no? Either they’re implying that the Russian’s intentionally bombed Syrian troops, which would be completely absurd, or they’re saying that it was an accident. If that’s the case, why hasn’t Russia admitted it? Friendly fire is a fact of life during war, and real allies have no reason to cover it up from each other. Our military has accidentally bombed British troops on numerous occasions, and we never covered it up.

Or are they suggesting the Russian’s bombed the troops to make it look like the American’s did it? I guess it’s not impossible, but does it really serve their interests? Perhaps they bombed their own troops for propaganda reasons, but they’re already winning that front without having to resort to false flags.

It’s still impossible to say what happened with any certainty, but if this is true, then our military has just taken another step toward global war. The US has essentially taken the same step that Russia took earlier this year, when they sent their own aircraft to fight the enemies of Assad. Washington is no longer content to let their proxies duke it out. They’re now directly contributing to the conflict by killing Syrian soldiers with American weapons, guided by American personnel.

If Syria’s assertions can be believed, then there’s now very little distance between US and Russian forces. Let’s just hope it is not true.
