Potentially historic Winter Storm Jonas is kicking into high gear Friday morning, with heavy snow, freezing rain and sleet being reported from the lower Mississippi Valley to West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.
Jonas has already dumped up to a foot of snow in western North Carolina as of Friday morning. A half foot or more of snow has also been measured in parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, upstate South Carolina, western Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas. Thundersnow was reported in the Nashville, Tennessee, metro area Friday morning with snowfall rates of an inch per hour. Even heavier snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour have been observed in Jackson, Kentucky, and Roanoke, Virginia, Friday morning.

Conditions will go downhill rapidly Friday night through Saturday in the mid-Atlantic and portions of the Northeast where blizzard conditions, strong winds and coastal flooding will develop. The National Weather Service has now issued blizzard warnings from northern Virginia to Long Island, including Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. Heavy snow and strong winds will bring travel to a grinding halt, between late Friday and Sunday morning.

As of Friday morning, more than 85 million people – or roughly one in every four Americans – in at least 20 states were covered by either a blizzard warning, winter storm watch, winter storm warning, winter weather advisory, or freezing rain advisory from Arkansas to the Carolinas to the New York City area and extreme southern New England.

Forecast Ice Accumulation Potential
Strong winds are expected north of the low pressure center over parts of the Mid-Atlantic Friday night into Saturday. These will likely cause power outages and sporadic damage.
Those winds will also raise the threat of coastal flooding during both high tides Saturday along the Atlantic coast from Long Island Sound to the Delmarva Peninsula.

South:
Arkansas: Up to 7 inches snow near North Little Rock; 0.25 inches ice in Paragould.
Kentucky: 8 inches snow near Boaz; 5 inches snow and 0.30 inches ice in Bowling Green; 2 inch per hour snowfall rates in Jackson.
Louisiana: Dusting of snow in Oak Grove and Lake Providence
North Carolina: 12 inches snow in Fairview; 7 inches snow in Waynesville.
South Carolina: 6 inches snow in Landrum; Up to 0.25 inches ice near Lancaster and Pageland.
Tennessee: 6 inches snow near Goodlettsville; Thundersnow and snowfall rates of an inch per hour in Nashville.
Mid-Atlantic/Appalachians:
Virginia: 7 inches snow near Pearisburg; Snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour in Roanoke Friday morning.
West Virginia: 8 inches snow in Logan; 6 inches snow in Oceana.
Midwest:
Kansas: 10 inches in Barnes; 9.5 inches in Haddam
Missouri: 3 inches snow in East Prairie
Nebraska: 9 inches in Hebron; 8 inches in Hubbell
South Dakota: 2.5 inches in Watertown
