(Before It's News)

A Lafayette man who opened fire on a postal worker delivering mail was sentenced to 10 years in a federal prison, according to Tuesday’s announcement from the Justice Department.

David Sonnier, 41, pleaded guilty in September to one count of discharging a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.

On top of the 10 years, he was also sentenced to two years of supervised release and ordered to pay for damages to the postal truck.

According to the plea agreement, the victim was delivering mail on his route in Lafayette in March 2014. He had the driver’s side window rolled down so he could stuff mail into mailboxes.

As the mailman stopped at Sonnier’s house, Sonnier opened fire with his Hi Point 9mm pistol. The round struck the driver’s door of postal truck, broke the window and pierced the victim’s pants.

While the victim was not injured, the gunshot caused $1,178 worth of damage to the vehicle.
