(Before It's News)

After being shot three times in the face by a fleeing burglary suspect, the Canton Police Department sadly report that K9 Officer Jethro, badge #60, succumbed to his wounds.

As reported by Fox 8 Cleveland, Jethro was part of the police response in the dark hours of Saturday morning to an alarm call. While searching the neighborhood, the suspect, later identified as Kelontre D. Barefield, 22, opened fire on the canine officer, striking him three times in the face, neck and shoulder.

Other officers on scene returned fire, wounding Barefield who was taken into custody.

Still amped up after the fight, Jethro was taken to a local veterinary hospital where he remained awake and struggling through Saturday night when medical personnel gave him a sedative to help him sleep, his partner beside him.

Jethro is still resting.

Services will be held at the Canton Memorial Civic Center located at 1101 Market Ave N on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 12 a.m. Doors will open at 11 a.m.
