Christian Gunter will sue the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office for false arrest.
Gunter is the 22-year-old who shot Roger Atlas at a gas station on Oct. 5, after the pair were involved in a road rage incident.
“We believe that sheriff's detectives had enough evidence to not have arrested Christian, based on Stand Your Ground,” Gunter's lawyer, Sarasota attorney Jeffrey Young, said Thursday. “My client has been damaged financially. He's out a lot of money for fees, bond and more. Of course, there's emotional damage after spending a couple days in the county jail, and there's damage to his reputation. This made national news.”
Young was referring to the Florida law that allows a resident to use deadly force in self-defense if he or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm.
