Ticked off teen doesn’t want to wake up for school, shoots family instead (VIDEO)
A 16-year-old boy is in custody after he shot three members of his family around 7 a.m. in their Nashville home Tuesday morning because he did not want to get out of bed for school.
“There was a quarrel about getting up and getting ready for the day when the 16-year-old ran to a closet, got a 9 mm handgun and started firing,” said Kris Mumford, Nashville police spokeswoman.
The teen’s grandmother, who is 67, was struck twice, and his 12-year-old sister and 6-year-old nephew were each struck at least once as well. The teen also tried to shoot his mother, but failed. His 2-year-old sister, who was also present, was not harmed.
The teen, whose name has not been released, fled from the home and ditched the gun, but was later found by police as he wandered down a nearby street. The gun, which his family said was unaware he had, was also recovered.
The teen, who now faces four counts of attempted homicide and one count of reckless endangerment, refused to talk with detectives.
All three shooting victims were transported to the hospital to receive treatment for the gunshot wounds and are expected to survive.
“Fortunately these were non life-threatening injuries,” Mumford said. “These are disturbing actions as the community as a whole is addressing youth violence. It’s going to take all of us working together to try and dissuade people from using this kind of violence.”
Mumford said the teen attends an alternative school and has a criminal history that includes multiple misdemeanors, but no history of violent crimes.
Officials say the city has seen a sharp increase in lethal violence at the hands of youths this year, the highest in more than ten years.
