Microsoft Research shows off how HoloLens can bring distant family members into your living room.
Get used to this new term… HOLOPORTATION!
That is the name being given to Microsoft holographic video messenger, and its set to see family members and loved ones beamed right into our homes via the HoloLens! Whats startling, is how smooth and life-like it looks!
It uses multiple 3D cameras to capture a subject from all angles, creating a “temporally consistent model” that can mimic the feeling of someone being in a room with you. During a TED Talk,Alex Kipman used it to virtually meet with a colleague in front of a Mars backdrop, but this lab demo from Microsoft Research shows something a bit more realistic. That is, so long as you’re wearing one of the $3,000 augmented reality headsets.
The setup is in an incredibly controlled environment (the remote location and where the video hosted by Microsoft Research’s Shahram Izadai are laid out pretty similarly), but it definitely shows the potential of using the device as a means of long-distance communication. You can even record a portion of a holoportation session and play it back, shrinking it down to size to fit on your coffee table. It’s pretty neat! But it’s still incredibly early. Artifacts resulting from compression or motion tracking are still present, a reminder that this is still a prototype, and break the illusion a bit.
We have already seen long dead singers making comebacks via holographic technology with Tupac sprining to mind, but with the HoloLens abitily to record messages to be played later, how long before a Lady Gaga or Rhianna decide to produce a concert to be toured around the world after they die?
The HoloPortation goes hand in hand with Virtual Reality headsets, and VR is set to be the next craze in the world of technology with Facebook, Sony Playstation & Xbox all set to enter the market this year.
They call this “reality” but its as far from real as you can get. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebooks illustrious leader, recently smiled gleefully as thousands of his flock pulled on the goggles to “experience” VR for themselves. I say “experience” as this is the buzz word in the VR world. The claims that a Vitual Reality program will be as good as “experiencing” the real thing is just wrong on so many levels.
We are already living the irony of being around at a time when we have never been so connected to others around the globe, and yet at the same time separated from those all around us as we fall further and further into the screens of our smartphones, tablets, monitors & TV’s. Well this is set to get even worse when the masses start to put on the VR headsets and swap the real world for its virtual counterpart.
Dont worry about the long term psychological effects that VR headsets and the pixelated worlds they create with leave on the users – lets face it, how can these companies know what perils lie in wait a few years down the road? Some users may no longer wish, or have the ability, interact on a face-to-face basis with actual fellow humans!
With that being said, perhaps Microsoft are ahead of the game, pardon the pun. They obviously appreciate that one day very soon we are not even going to leave our rooms, let alone our homes. Look at where we are now, with some people communicating via text to other family members and loved ones… in the same room!
Before too long, the lines between the virtual and real worlds will be that blurred it will be hard to distinguish where one ends and the other ends. Nothing demostrates this better than something called Face-2-Face technology, and i will close by letting Aaron & Melissa Dykes tell you all about this uber creepy software that will have you questioning absolutely everything, or anyone, you see or hear from this point forward….
