United Kingdom — Britain’s corporate media has been slammed for downplaying a monumental anti-austerity protest in London on Saturday. A huge demonstration in the capital brought tens of thousands of protesters to the streets to demonstrate not only against austerity measures, but to demand the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron. The corporate media’s initial lack coverage of the event provoked outrage on social media.

Tens of thousands of protesters including groups focusing on issues like health, housing, jobs, and education marched through central London defending public services against cuts. Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, union chief Len McCluskey, and leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett, also took part. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was unable to attend but sent a message of encouragement to protesters.

Addressing the demo, John McDonnell said:

“I think Cameron should go, but I think he should take his part with him. His Government is now bankrupt in terms of political ideas, and bankrupt in terms of what they have done with the economy as well.”

The range of demands included an end to Government spending cuts and the alleged privatisation of the National Health Service. In addition, demonstrators called for a universal living wage, the scrapping of the Trade Union Bill, and an end to student tuition fees. Many expressed outrage at recent allegations that David Cameron profited from his father’s offshore fund.
