Iranian Admiral Threatens to Sink US Ships in Persian Gulf
While most people would expect relations between the US and Iran to cool now that numerous sanctions against the country have been lifted, the truth of the matter is a bit more complicated. The US government still views Iran as a defiant regime that won’t bend to their interests, and the Iranians have no reason to believe that our government is altruistic after we provided so much clandestine support to the rebels in Syria. And frankly, they’ll probably never trust us so long as we’re allied with Saudi Arabia.
Which explains why officials with the Iranian government still like to hurl threats at the US from time to time, the latest of which comes from an Iranian admiral. On Monday, Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi asserted on state television that “Wherever the Americans look in the Persian Gulf, they will see us,” before adding “they know that if they commit the slightest mistake, we will drown their vessels in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, or the Sea of Oman.”
Though Fadavi claimed that his navy has capabilities that the US is not aware of, he did reveal that there are underground weapon systems along the coast, equipped with surface-to-sea missiles. Fadavi rejected joint patrols in the region between the US, Britain and France, calling them an “an absolute evil” and assuring the Iranian public that the “Americans are aware that Iran would destroy their warships if they take a wrong measure in the region.”
