(Before It's News)

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the shooting death of one of Yellowstone National Park’s most famous grizzly bears.

The bear, formally named Number 211, but more commonly known as “Scarface,” was one of the most often studied and photographed bears in the area for the last 25 years. He was found fatally shot outside of the park in November, but a statement released April 25 by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks confirmed that his death is under investigation.

The bear was protected by federal law, as well as the State of Montana, as grizzlies in the area are considered a threatened species. Experts say it’s rare, only occurring about five percent of the time, for a grizzly in the Yellowstone ecosystem to survive for 25 years. During his prime, Scarface weighed an impressive 600 pounds, but at his last capture in 2015, he weighed just over half that at 338 pounds.
