Update: 7 Year Old Abandoned by Parents in Bear-Infested Woods Found Alive After Intense 6-Day Search
This story has a lot happier ending than most people were probably expecting.
Yamato Tanooka, the seven-year-old dumped in bear-infested woods and abandoned by his parents as a punishment for throwing rocks at cars was luckily found safe, albeit malnourished and dehydrated, six days after the fact.
The boy was found four miles from the spot where he had been dumped, wondering around on a military training ground (debatable if that’s more dangerous than bear-infested woods). Soldiers training at the Komagatake military base spotted him just before eight in the morning Thursday.
The boy was brought to a hospital for examination. His father apologized profusely outside of the hospital, saying his actions had put his son through “an extremely painful experience and caused tremendous trouble to people at his school and for those who searched for him.”
“I really didn’t think things would turn out this way,” Takayuki Tanooka said in a voice quivering with emotion. “I think my actions were very excessive, and I deeply regret it.”
Everyone, including the boy’s father, seems surprised the boy was found alive and overall well, having not been eaten by bears or shot during a military training exercise he accidentally stumbled into.
Pretty astounding considering many adults couldn’t survive for nearly a week alone in the woods.
