Jiu-Jitsu Star Jason Lee Kidnapped at Gunpoint by Corrupt Rio Military Police, Forced to Withdraw Money from Two ATMs
Jason Lee (above), an athlete down in Rio training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, reported he was kidnapped and forced at gunpoint to go to two ATMs to withdraw money.
But he wasn’t just kidnapped by anyone… he was kidnapped by the military police.

The police apparently pulled him over and forced him into their car with guns, then drove him to the ATMs where they extracted 2000 Reais (equivalent of about $611 USD) from him.
Via the New Zealand Herald:
Lee said he was kidnapped by people in police uniforms, “not by some random people with guns.”
He added “I was threatened with arrest if I did not get in their private car and accompany them to two ATMs to withdraw a large sum of money for a bribe.
“I’m not sure what’s more depressing, the fact this stuff is happening to foreigners so close to the Olympic Games or the fact that Brazilians have to live in a society that enables this absolute bullshit on a daily basis. This place is well and truly f***ked in every sense of the word imaginable.”
Lee is right; this bullshit does happen there all the time there. As the Olympics get closer, more stories like this one are coming out all the time. A few weeks ago, two members of the Australian Paralympic sailing squad were also robbed at gunpoint while they were riding bikes in a Rio park.
Ironically after the story broke, the police showed up at Lee’s apartment building again, asking for him by name. He called the New Zealand ambassador and refused to let them in. When they sent more police from their civil branch later, they said they were just from Internal Affairs… apparently there to investigate themselves.
