Restorations underway for WWII bomber found at the bottom of Lake Michigan (VIDEO)
An extraordinary World War II aircraft recovered from the bottom of Lake Michigan was brought to the Air Zoo in Portage, Michigan, Friday, where it will be restored to its original glory.
The restoration of the U.S. Navy Douglas SBD-2P “Dauntless” Dive Bomber will be done by volunteers and is expected to take three to five years to complete.
Lt. Junior Grade John Lendo crash landed the SBD-2P into the lake during a secret training mission on Feb. 18, 1944. Lendo survived the crash, but later died during combat in the Philippines.
Troy Thrash, president & CEO of the Air Zoo, said during a welcoming ceremony Friday that the restorations of the aircraft isn’t just about the aircraft itself, but also about restoring the lives and stories behind it.
The bomber was the third military aircraft recovered from Lake Michigan and will also be the third to be restored by the Air Zoo.
