(Before It's News)

A police memorial in Richmond, Virginia, was vandalized with red spray paint sometime overnight Tuesday.

The face of the bronze statue was painted red, with a large red “X” across the statue’s body. On the ground in front of the memorial are the words “Justice for Alton” painted in red, presumably referring to Alton Sterling, who was shot and killed by police officers during a confrontation in Baton Rouge last week.

Authorities said they first received a call about the damage Wednesday morning and cleaning crews had to use two different cleaning solutions to remove the paint.

Glenwood Burley, a retired police officer who was acquainted with a number of the officers listed on the memorial, called the act painful and disappointing.

“The fact is that this was a blatant and despicable act of cowardliness,” Burley said. “I would have thought that Richmond with its relationship between the law enforcement and community, that this would not occur here.”

Apparently, Burley was wrong.
