Last week, several hundred Venezuelan women ignored the demands of their socialist government, and broke through a border checkpoint manned by armed soldiers. They poured into neighboring Columbia to buy basic necessities that can no longer be found in their own country.

But that wasn’t the end of the border excursions. After realizing that they could no longer keep people from traveling into Columbia, and after numerous food riots and lootings swept the country, the government decided to open the border for a 12 hour period on Sunday. An estimated 35,000 people took advantage of the brief window of opportunity, so that they could buy food, medicine, and toiletries.

11 months ago the Maduro government ordered the closure of border crossings to prevent smugglers from selling subsidized goods at a profit in Columbia, which was contributing to domestic shortages. But nearly a year later the shortages have never been so dire. Clearly, the smuggling was no match for the asinine policies of a corrupt socialist regime.

Observers are calling the 12 hour border opening a tacit admission of failure on the part of the Maduro regime. Their efforts to maintain Venezuela’s command economy have only served to fuel more lootings and food shortages, and the country’s desperate population can no longer be contained. Maduro’s closest allies have been pressuring him to step down in recent weeks, and it seems it’s only a matter of time before his government collapses.
