The store owner, a 69-year-old man, approached the men and ordered them to stop, police said. One ran off. The other two hopped into the Corolla and prepared to drive off. The shop owner tried to stop them by reaching through the passenger side of the car to take the key from the ignition.
The driver, identified by police as Jamik Cannon, 23, of Hempstead, put the car in reverse, causing the store owner to lose his balance. He was dragged for about 20 feet. As he was dragged, he pulled out his legally licensed handgun and fired the weapon, striking Cannon in his right shoulder.
