We Are the Borg: Eerie Onion Video on How Hive Minds Work Not That Much of a Joke; DARPA’s Working on It
The Onion, in straight-faced humor Onion fashion, recently took on the concept of a hive mind in regards to synchronized swimming.
While it’s funny, there’s something under the surface (forgive the swimming pun) that is more creepy than funny…
Could it be this old video of DARPA-funded neurosurgeon Rodolfo Llinás talking about working on a project to insert nanowires into a person’s brain and connect people to a computer-controlled hive mind?
Of course, that was years ago now. Note how his MIT assistant talks about how it was when NSA agents showed up to check in on the group’s reesarch and that he thinks some of their intentions are probably “sinister”.
Over $300 million has gone into the government’s BRAIN Initiative so far, the project described as a “bold new research effort to revolutionize our understanding of the human mind”. But just what exactly is the military really revolutionizing it for?
We all know DARPA, who proposed putting EEG readers into every classroom in American to have public school children upload their brainwaves to a central computer somewhere under the pretext of “fostering a love of science” (see video below) isn’t just sitting around pining over new ways to treat Alzheimer’s because they’re so darn caring.
Makes you wonder… the Onion jokes, but how much of this is really a joke?
Just how close is the government to creating The Borg from Star Trek in real life?
