Hermine Shifts NorthWest, Long Island Evacuation Order Given by Mistake, Severe Beach Erosion
As Hermine continues to disrupt Labor Day weekend for millions of people, residents of Florida and Georgia are beginning to assess the damage caused by the storm which made landfall in Florida early Friday morning as a Category 1 hurricane. Heavy rains brought dangerous flooding and knocked out power to thousands, but the storm, which claimed at least two lives, also wreaked havoc on coastlines, chewing away large swaths of beaches.
In Pinellas County, Florida, officials are saying the rough surf and pounding waves caused by Hermine this week may result in the worst beach erosion this decade. On some beaches, waves were washing over the dunes, Hilary Stockdon of the U.S. Geological Survey office in St. Petersburg and lead author of a study on erosion of Florida’s beaches, told the Tampa Bay Times. On Indian Shores, water was pushing through a low area between the condominiums.
Two condos and a house in Manasota Key in Charlotte County, Florida have also been condemned after Hurricane Hermine caused massive beach erosion, according to NBC2 Southwest Florida. The homes were located in an area already impacted by Tropical Storm Colin in June.
