Exorcist Jeffrey Seelman is our special guest & we get into what its like being a REAL LIFE exorcist!
Right now, I & millions of others around the world are watching the new TV show, The Exorcist from Fox & let me tell you, wow, this is right up there with the original 1973 movie of the same name.
We often talk about demonic entities & other dimension on the show, both of which feature in the Hollywood versions of exorcisms.
In the TV show, an up and coming Vatican priest is taken aback by claims made by one of his congregation when she comes to him & shares her fears that her daughter may be under possession.
He explains how demons & possessions are more metaphorical than physical. He later learns the truth but his local bishop is equally as dismissive of claims of possession.
But the Catholic Church does have a long tradition of exorcisms.
Its manual on the procedure, Of Exorcisms and Certain Supplications, was written in 1614 and updated in 1999. The recent revision emphasises that exorcists must first rule that possession is not mental illness, through medical and psychiatric evaluation. Media coverage is discouraged.
By 2004, Pope John Paul II called for every bishop to have an exorcist in his diocese. Ten years later, the Vatican officially recognized the 250-strong International Association of Exorcists. And by 2015, the Catholic Register reported that the “once dying trade” now claims over 100 North American members.
