As of October 25th, 2016 at 11:40pm, the FAA has issued a “No Fly Zone” over Cannonball, North Dakota. The circle spanning 14 miles across, is set over the area where protesters are camped. The flight ban will last until November 4th at 11:40pm. The ban is for all pilots operating an ‘aircraft,’ which as of recently includes drones. LEO are of course exempt from this flight ban.

What makes this really interesting is that just days before, on Sunday Oct. 23rd, Morton County Sheriff’ Deputies fired upon a drone as it flew over their staging area. They succeeded in damaging the drone, but not taking it out of commission. The fact that the FAA has now issued this no fly order speaks volumes about the level of interest the federal government has on this issue.

As a person who films police, I feel this is a violation of our rights. If it’s that easy to say “no drones for civilians” there, it could happen anywhere. With the new FAA Drone regulations that took effect Aug 29th, the FAA has made it mandatory to register drones, giving them firm control over drone flight.

What was envisioned as an excellent tool for filming has now been rendered useless in a place where it is most necessary to document the activities of these corrupt pigs. If you would like to let the FAA know you think this tactic is garbage, their info is listed below, as well as that of the Morton County Sheriff’s Department, the pigs that shot at someone’s flying camera. (What they wish they could do to the non-flying ones.)
