A former deputy of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department was caught speeding on Interstate 77 north, but he was given no ticket after showing the officer his likely inauthentic badge.

This should outrage anybody who has been given a speeding ticket. It is quite apparent that the laws do not apply to those who attempt to apply them to us every day.

Demere Houston, 26, was seen traveling 103 miles per hour in the pouring rain when he stopped along East 55th exit ramp in Newburgh Heights, Ohio.

Houston left the Department in July and is now working as a Dean of Students at a Cleveland school. According to the department, he turned in his badge, so it is most likely that the badge he showed was inauthentic and bought at a police supply store.

Body camera footage shows an officer asking Houston, “Where do you work? Sheriff’s department?”

At that point, Houston showed his badge. “I’m not laughing. It’s not funny at all. 103 miles an hour out here in the rain,” the officer says, admonishing Houston, and then he lets him go!

“Have a nice day!” the officers says to Houston as he drives off.

When asked about the incident, Newburgh Heights Police Chief John Majoy said, “Some may agree with it, some may disagree with it, but at the end of the day, it’s the officer’s discretion in doing so.”

Majoy has decided not to press charges on Houston for impersonating a cop. He says he has turned over the information to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department to pursue an internal investigation if they wish.

Why is it that these officers feel as if they are a priveleged class of people who do not have to obey the law which they enforce on the rest of us by threat of imprisonment or death?
