Hallucinatory ‘Matrix’ Style Pills Could be the Future of TV – Netflix CEO

As entertainment firms fight to stay ahead of virtual and augmented reality systems, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is keeping tabs on hallucinogenic drugs.
At the Wall Street Journal Live conference on Tuesday, Hastings discussed potential challenges the streaming service may face in the future, including ‘pharmacological’ competition.
The chief executive went on to describe a Matrix-like scenario in which users could take a ‘blue pill’ to experience hallucinatory entertainment and a ‘white pill’ to come back to reality – and says it could happen in the next twenty years.

At the WSJ conference, Hastings explained that the firm is working hard to draw users’ attention away from apps, social media, and other major competitors, TechCrunch reports.
The service is now available in 130 countries on more than 600 IPSs, but it still remains unclear what will emerge as its biggest rival in the years to come.
‘Is it VR, is it gaming, is it pharmacological?’ Hastings asked, addressing the future challenges.
‘In twenty or fifty years taking a personalized blue pill, you just hallucinate in an entertaining way and then a white pill brings you back to normality is perfectly viable,’ Hastings said.
‘And if the source of human entertainment in thirty or forty years is pharmacological we’ll be in real trouble.’
During the discussion, the Netflix CEO also explained that the firm’s fundamental goal is about ‘eliminating loneliness and boredom’ through entertainment.
Original content, like the massively popular Stranger Things, could pave the way for the future of Netflix, TechCrunch reports.
‘We’re going to evolve past just the Hollywood enclave and really try to unleash the world’s great, high-end creators,’ Hastings said.
