(Before It's News)

A retired homeowner turned small-time farmer was caught off guard last week when the SWAT team showed up at his Cartersville, Georgia, property searching for illegally grown marijuana plants, only to find out that instead of pot, the plants in question were actually okra.

Dwayne Perry said the sound of the low flying helicopter awakened him and a few minutes later, deputies with the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office were banging on his door.

“I was scared actually, at first, because I didn’t know what was happening,” Perry said.

Authorities believed Perry was growing pot and were there to bust him, but they were wrong. As it turned out, the plants they were eyeballing were okra, which is not illegal to grow in the state of Georgia.

Georgia State Patrol Capt. Kermit Stokes noted the two plants have several characteristics that are similar. Still, Perry said a mistake like that should not have happened, noting that the officers were “strapped to the gills” and the incident could have ended much worse.

Stokes apologized for the mistake.
