The phrase ‘bread and circuses,’ coined by the Roman satirist Juvenal who said that under Augustus Caesar’s dictatorship the plebeian class had to be provided bread to keep them from rioting and cruel public spectacles to divert their attention from the reigning tyranny, rings true today with one variation.
