A snapshot of Edward Snowden’s surprise appearance at the dinner, where he shared the stage with actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt.(Robert Scheer)
The whistleblower attended the 2016 American Civil Liberties Union SoCal dinner via video stream to honor of actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played Snowden in the Oliver Stone film “Snowden,” as well as tell Americans that, “When systems fall, when things break down.. people remain. Don’t be afraid of what comes next. Be ready.”
When Gordon-Levitt exclaimed that he didn’t even know Snowden would appear, the whistleblower joked, “It turns out I can keep a secret.”
Truthdig publisher Zuade Kaufman and editor in chief Robert Scheer were in attendance at the ceremony which took place at Beverly Wilshire Hotel Sunday night. Other honorees included Norman Lear, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, director Catherine Hardwicke and Buzzfeed executive Frank Cooper III.
A video of the event will be made available on Monday, so check back to watch Snowden, Lear and others. Meanwhile, here are some tweets of highlights from the night.

I think it’s great that Snowden is getting some positive press and exposure. As a whistleblower he should of been protected by the people of this country. He was doing his fellow citizens a great favor by exposing all the corruption taking place by the political elites for their own personal interests and blackmail schemes. It would be appropriate to allow this man back into the country without the fear of vindictive reprisals by those who wish to keep their crimes from prying eyes.
