The International Criminal Court says the US military and the CIA may have committed war crimes in Afghanistan, mostly between 2003 and 2004.
The ICC chief prosecutor, in an annual report said there was a reasonable basis to believe that the crimes were committed through cruel and violent interrogation of detainees. Fatou Bensouda said evidences on the ground are enough to open an investigation into torture and related ill-treatment by US armed forces and CIA agents. The United States is not a party to the court, which was established to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The ICC prosecutor has also not announced a final decision on an investigation. Earlier, a US state department spokesman, however, expressed concerns that an ICC investigation of war crimes in Afghanistan could target American personnel.
