Growing Food Together…

If you have seen a vacant lot in your neighborhood and thought about how great it would be to see food growing there, this video gives you a step by step approach to making plans.

A community garden is a great way to get some of your produce locally and enjoy being outdoors even if you don’t have a back yard to transform. It can bring great things into your life besides fresh, local organic food. You make new friends and share the satisfaction of turning useless land into food producing land!

Sarosh Anwar in Toronto explains the process. You will need a primary coordinator and a group of about 5-7 people. She tells us what to look for in the site itself: how much daylight does it get, are there drainage issues, is it easy to get to on foot for those that will be working there?

Other important steps are creating a good layout, a budget and getting permission from the town. It’s never too early to start planning for next year!
