Thousands of people in the US city of Los Angeles have held a rally as part of nationwide protests against a controversial oil pipeline in the state of North Dakota.
The demonstrators carried signs reading “Standing tall with Standing Rock” and also held an inflatable black pipeline with the words “Water is life, No more dirty oil” painted on it. The multi-billion-dollar project, known as the Dakota Access pipeline, is to carry oil from North Dakota to several Midwestern states. The latest protests come despite an army order to halt the pipeline.
The project has triggered controversy since its approval back in July. Native American tribes, as well as activists and celebrities are opposed to the pipeline which they fear will contaminate their drinking water and threaten sacred sites. Thousands of people representing different tribes from all over America have traveled to North Dakota in solidarity with the protest movement dubbed -Standing Rock Sioux.
