J. Dennis Hastert, the former speaker of the House convicted of breaking financial rules in making payoffs to cover up his past sexual abuse of a teenager, wants back the $1.7 million he paid as part of a secret settlement, according to court documents.
The revelation came in papers filed on Wednesday in Circuit Court in Illinois by Mr. Hastert’s lawyer in response to a complaint by the accuser that he was still owed $1.8 million.
