Shooting at Tennessee National Guard armory wounds 10
A party held at a National Guard armory in Brownsville, Tennessee, on Friday erupted in violence after gunshots rang out and 10 people were left wounded.
According to authorities, a high school party was being hosted at the armory Friday evening when a fight broke out shortly before midnight. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Susan Niland told Reuters that shots were fired, with eight adults and two juveniles sustaining injuries.
The wounded were transported to hospitals where most were released following treatment. However, three victims remained hospitalized into Saturday.
Not much is known about what exactly caused the altercation leading up to the shooting, but TBI officials are interviewing witnesses. Earlier Friday evening, Brownsville residents said an altercation arose at a basketball game.
“I know my son had gone to the basketball game last night and he was saying things looked a little rough,” Tracie Williams, a resident of Brownsville, told local CBS affiliate WREG. “The kids trying to have a good time I guess, and someone didn’t want that.”
It is unclear whether that incident had anything to do with the shooting at the armory. Brownsville Mayor Bill Rawls, speaking alongside a coalition aimed at deterring violence, said the city is committed to bringing the shooters to justice.
“We’re going to put all the resources at our disposal to find the shooters that perpetrated the violence in our community,” Rawls said.
The TBI is working alongside Brownsville Police Department in the investigation. No suspects have been taken into custody yet.
