(Before It's News)

The National Park Service’s Investigative Services Branch is looking for a wayward batch of rifle and pistol ammunition stolen from a park in southern Oregon.

A statement from the NPS says that “Thousands of rounds of rifle and pistol caliber ammunition were taken from a locked building in the headquarters area of the park.”

The cartridges were used in the park’s law enforcement program and the agency is treating the theft as a felony. Though the NPS has not disclosed how many rounds are missing, media reports have placed the quantity at 10,000 rounds.

Crater Lake, in rural Klamath County, is the only national park in Oregon and encompasses more than 180,000 acres of public land, receiving in excess of 750,000 visitors annually. In responding to comments on their social media page, the park noted they have 10 armed rangers who qualify on rifles, pistols, and shotguns multiple times per year. The agency has employed armed rangers since the late 1800’s when they carried rifles to protect wildlife from illegal hunters in Yellowstone National Park.

The NPS is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of those responsible for the ammo theft.

If you have any information you can contact the agency by one of the following methods:
