These are unique crystals with an atomic structure that repeats not just space, but time, putting both in motion without energy involved. It’s official—researchers have reported in detail how to measure and create these interesting crystals. Two independent teams of scientists claim they have created these time crystals in a lab based off this blueprint, which confirms the life of a new form of matter.
Norman Yao, lead researcher from the University of California, Berkeley said:
This is a new phase of matter, period, but it is also really cool because it is one of the first examples of non-equilibrium matter. For the last half-century, we have been exploring equilibrium matter, like metals and insulators. We are just now starting to explore a whole new landscape of non-equilibrium matter.
This is such a big and shocking discovery, that it may even come off as science-fiction and fake. What way can time crystals be best understood? and what are they?
Well here it is:
Think of actual crystals you usually see. They have an atomic structure that repeats itself in space; just like a carbon lattice of a diamond. Because they are in equilibrium at their ground state, they become motionless.
When a material is in its ground state, also referred to as the zero-point energy of a system, it actually means movement should be impossible because energy would need to be expended. Time crystals do have a structure that repeats time, not just in space, and it is constantly oscillating in its ground state. Its as if the structure and matter are made by a time loop that repeats itself.
Yao and his team have made a detailed blueprint that exactly describes how to measure and create a time crystals properties, and then predict what various phases around the time crystal should be.
That means they mapped out the equivalent of liquid, gas and solid phases for a new form of matter.
Yao said:
“Wouldn’t it be super weird if you jiggled the Jell-o and found that somehow it responded at a different period? But that is the essence of the time crystal. You have some periodic driver that has a period ’T’, but the system somehow synchronizes so that you observe the system oscillating with a period that is larger than ’T’.”
