(Before It's News)

Springfield Armory officials dropped the news that the company is exploring production variants of their XD and 1911 lines in the vaunted 10mm Auto chambering.

In an online video released Saturday, Springfield owner/CEO Dennis Reese rose to the occasion and delivered the goods on moving into centimeter territory.

“We are already working on an XDm, it’s only a matter of when we will have something,” said Reese. “So I know that we have been working on this for awhile, but I do believe that we are near the end on it. It’s probably a 2017 project, so we’ll keep you informed on that,” he said, looking to a grinning Team Springfield professional shooter Rob Latham.

Then Reese switched gears from polymer pistols to longslides.

“As far as 1911’s are concerned, we are talking about that, to see if we can come up with some kind of a TRP-style version of a 10mm,” said Reese. “I think a lot of the folks out in the Northwest from my understanding they get all excited about 10mm. I hope finally we are going to have something for you customers that are really in to that caliber.”

Springfield has never made a 10mm Auto for their XD line even though Glock users have enjoyed their Model 20 in several variants for nearly two decades. Likewise, Colt’s Delta Elite has long answered the call for 10mm 1911s. This year’s SHOT show proved the caliber and has been increasingly popular– despite nearly dying out in the Miami Vice-era– with several 1911 makers including Kimber debuting new centimeter offerings.

Springer does have at least some anecdotal 10mm history in their steel-framed guns. From the early 1980s into the early 1990s, the West German firm of Peters, Stahls GmbH produced a limited run of Omega 1911-style pistols in 10mm which were imported by Springfield. Beyond that, the company’s Custom Shop has offered the PC9102 model as being special order in “any caliber suitable to the 1911 platform” including .38 Super and 10mm.
