A felon who has been on the run for five months was apprehended by the United States Marshals Service in Albuquerque on Monday.

Eugene Padilla and his wife, Amanda, were taken into custody after their vehicle was identified by Task Force Investigators, according to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Eugene, who has prior felony convictions and was considered to be armed and extremely dangerous, was added to New Mexico’s Most Wanted list in October 2016 after having been a fugitive for a month. He was wanted by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department for failure to appear on a grand jury indictment for attempt to commit 1st degree murder, attempt to commit a felony, trafficking by distribution, abuse of a child, shooting at an occupied dwelling, criminal damage to property, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Amanda Padilla had felony warrants for failure to appear on fraud and forgery charges, as well as failure to appear in a child support case.

Eugene is accused of shooting a man outside of an Albuquerque 7-Eleven in May 2016. Police say that during what they later learned was a drug-related dispute, Eugene Padilla first chased the subject around an SUV in the parking lot. Then, as the subject attempted to flee, Padilla fired numerous rounds, striking the man multiple times in the leg and narrowly missing innocent bystanders.

Padilla was then tackled by two witnesses, who also happened to be armed. The witnesses held Padilla at gunpoint until police arrived a short time later and placed him in custody.

The injured subject was transported to a local hospital and, although seriously injured, survived the shooting.

Both Eugene and Amanda – whose charges are unrelated to the shooting – were booked into the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center.
