Shooters and firearm owners from across southern Ontario on Monday packed a municipal meeting in Ajax, located about 28 miles east of Toronto, Canada. They came to support a proposal by the Firearms Outlet Canada gun store located in Ajax to build an indoor firing range, according to The Gun Blog.
In fact, so many people showed up that many had to listen from the lobby. Shooters from southern Ontario are hungry for places to shoot because many facilities are at full capacity and refusing new members while ranges in Toronto have been forced to close. Ontario has more licensed shooters than any other province or territory in Canada.
“Thank you for coming out and not only supporting us as a business, but the entire shooting community,” said Adam Caruana of Firearms Outlet Canada.
The company needs municipal permission to build a range in the shopping plaza where its store is located. The new facility would open this year if the change in land use is approved without delay.
The range would have 17 firing lanes, classrooms and an expanded retail area. Firearms Outlet Canada opened in June 2015, and has expanded to nine employees as business grew. According to owner Fred Pellegrino, “It’s been growth from the day we opened our doors, this is our next logical step.”
The range would include advanced systems to automate targets, filter air and reduce noise and vibration. Mike Brake, a firearms instructor, former SWAT member and competition shooter who supports the project, said that, “Firearms Outlet Canada is going to have the Taj Mahal of training facilities.”
