Buffalo police could soon count the locally-produced Glock-magazine fed quadrail .40-caliber rifles from Just Right Carbines among their duty weapons.

A $282,600 state grant would add 450 active shooter vests and 115 of the rifles to the force, should the Buffalo Common Council approve the purchase this week, as reported by local media.

While the police officers’ union wanted each officer to have an AR-15 in .223, officials felt the .40 caliber rifles offered by Just Right Carbine fit the bill for urban use while allowing officers to use the same ammunition and magazines they already carry for their Glock handguns.

The quadrail rifles, said Lt. Jeff Rinaldo, chief of staff for the Buffalo Police Department, give officers “a lot more accuracy at a distance, while still maintaining control of rounds to the best of our ability.”

Debi DeBanto, the marketing chief for LDB Supply, Just Right Carbines’ master distributor, told Guns.com their rifles bring something different to the table.

“While AR’s certainly serve a purpose in a tactical setting, the pistol caliber Just Right Carbine provides plenty of knock down power, longer range, and accuracy [over a pistol], while limiting unintended results in populated areas,”said DeBanto. “In addition, by utilizing the rounds and magazines they already carry for their handguns, the JRC prevents officers from having to differentiate in a fast-moving situation.”

DeBanto said they are beginning to get a bit of interest from the law enforcement community for their carbines, sometimes getting several requests a month for test and evaluation firearms.

If approved, BPD will be the third department issuing pistol caliber Just Right Carbines to their officers. Another agency, the McComb, Ohio, police department is utilizing a variant in 9mm with an Smith & Wesson M&P mag well for their officers.

“We bought three of these carbines to carry on duty in our patrol vehicles,” said McComb PD Chief Gregory E. Smith. “We all love the way we can carry our M&P handgun magazines and more with the carbine and have all the same ammunition. We can qualify with ease on the state qualification course and have been very happy with the performance and reliability of this tool.”

DeBanto said all they are waiting for from Buffalo is the actual approval of the purchase order which is expected sometime within the next month or so. Once fielded, the rifles will be issued to supervisors.
