Eye Roll: “Microaggression” and “Safe Space” Have Officially Been Added to the Dictionary
Among a handful of other new 2017 words, Merriam-Webster has officially added “safe space” and “microaggression” to their dictionary, further legitimizing them.
A “microaggression” is officially defined as a —
“comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group (such as a racial minority),” and also, “behavior or speech that is characterized by such comments or actions”.
The examples include a quote about how “perpetrators” commit “microaggressions”:
“…the power of microaggression lies in its invisibility to the perpetrator, who typically finds it difficult to believe that he or she possesses biased attitudes. — Emily Skop”
If something is done “unconsciously or unintentionally,” then the use of “perpetrator” even though technically correct seems like a bit of overkill, doesn’t it? (Both Merriam-Webster definitions of “perpetrate” include the word “crime” just by the way.)
A “safe space” is defined as —
“a place (as on a college campus) intended to be free of bias, conflict, criticism, or potentially threatening actions, ideas, or conversations”.
At least they made sure to point out safe spaces are a place “as on a college campus,” but it is still rather misleading to make it seem like one can actually find safe spaces in all that many other places don’t you think?
Merriam-Webster’s definition of “unicorn” is a lot more honest, beginning by specifically denoting the creature is “mythical”… kind of like what they should have done with safe spaces in the real world outside of college campuses.
Hm. Is the phrase “social justice warrior” headed for dictionary officialdom next? (Can’t wait to see how they define that.)
And while the dictionary is adding new politically charged words as the dumbing down continues, meanwhile Google is straight up changing the definition of words to target political conservatives.

And since the majority of everyone gets their definitions of reality from Google… it’s no wonder the company denoted its new parent company as “Alphabet”.
