(Before It's News)

A 78-year-old man whose dog was shot and killed as he was going for a walk in Rushford, Wisconsin, last week received a new four-legged friend Saturday thanks, in part, to the local sheriff.

The man, only identified as Mr. Carpenter, said he was out for a walk with his two dogs when they got away from him, running ahead to a field about 100 yards away. Carpenter said he heard a gunshot and when he walked over to the field, he found one of the dogs, Antone, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz said Carpenter was devastated by the loss and many people in the community offered to help the man find another dog. However, Carpenter turned the offers away and instead asked Sheriff Matz to help him. Matz agreed and “Lovebug” was delivered to Carpenter from a shelter in southern Wisconsin over the weekend.

Authorities say Carpenter and his dogs were not trespassing when Antone was shot and they had every right to be in the field where he was killed. The sheriff’s office is still searching for the person responsible for shooting Antone.
