PETA is planning to run a stark new billboard that seems to
ask, “Is that a pig in your belly—or are you just happy to see meat?”
Here’s why: A report about a (literally) growing threat to
our national health is so shocking that the F word appears right in the
title—”fat,” that is. The 2012 edition of F as in Fat: How
Obesity Threatens America’s Future from
the Trust for America’s Health has caused a stir with its conclusion that if
current trends don’t change, 13 states will have an obesity rate of more than
60 percent by 2030! But if that’s the prognosis, PETA’s billboard offers the
prescription: Go vegan.

Get Lean and Green but
Not Mean
Avoiding the public-health disaster described in the report
can be as simple as shifting our eating habits, so PETA wants to place its new
“You Are What You Eat” billboards in the capital cities of some of
the at-risk states—starting with Missouri and Oklahoma.
Exploiting animals for food has been a catastrophe for
animals, the environment, and our health. Vegans weigh, on average, 18
percent less than meat-eaters do and, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics,
are less prone to heart
disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Unlike vegan foods, meat, eggs, and dairy products contain
no fiber, but they’re packed with artery-clogging cholesterol (which is never
found in plants) and saturated fats.
What You Can Do
Ready to cut the fat? Going vegan is the easiest and
healthiest way to lose
unwanted pounds and keep them off, and it’s never been easier—or more delicious. PETA’s here to
help you get started!
