Adopting a new puppy is fun and exciting, but it also takes a lot of work. Your puppy will require a great deal of hands-on attention and training. Potty training should be implemented from day one (or two). Otherwise, you can expect to spend more time cleaning up after your pet instead of playing, taking walks and getting to know the latest addition to the family.

The following puppy potty-training tips will help you and your pet live accident-free.

    1.  Timing is everything.

Creating a tight schedule is one of the most important aspects of potty training. Establish a regular potty time for your puppy and stick to it every day. Following a set daily schedule will make it easier for both of you to stay on track.

    2.  Location, location, location …

It’s essential to choose a fixed location for your puppy to do his business and mark territory. Dogs rely on scent as a part of the training process, so taking your pup to the same spot helps the process along. Whether you take your dog outside to do the duty, or create an indoor potty spot with newspaper, pee pads or a doggy litter box, make it the same place each time.

    3.  Business is business.

Common sense will tell you that if you’re walking and training your dog on a city or suburban sidewalk, he must be leashed. But keep him on a leash for indoor training as well, until he’s mastered the art of potty training. Putting the leash on your puppy lets him know it’s business time. Otherwise, he’ll just decide to play and have unwanted accidents inside.

You will also have to train yourself to pick up after your dog when he goes outside. Make sure to bring a pooper-scooper, or a plastic bag and paper towel to clean up the mess.

    4.  What’s in a name?

Come up with a word or phrase to cue your puppy when it’s potty time. Most dogs will circle and squat before doing their business. When this happens, identify the deed with a short cue such as “potty,” “break” or “now.” Positive verbal praise and treat reinforcement works wonders when your pup delivers in the right spot.

    5.  The warning signs.

Puppies will give you visual warning signs when they are getting ready to do their business. Usually they will sniff the ground and walk in circles before they squat. If your puppy starts to squat inside, pick him up and move him to his designated potty place, or bring him outside. Say your verbal cue, and praise away after your pup has experienced success.

    6.  Clean up their act.

If your puppy has an accident, clean it up immediately and thoroughly using all-natural, eco- and pet-friendly odor cleansers. Puppies often sniff their way back to the scene of the crime, so eliminating odors is a must if you want to prevent repeat offenses.

    7.  Yes, it is your fault.

If your puppy continues to have daily accidents inside your home, it is your fault. You are responsible for training your pet, not the other way around. When you find an accident, it means you haven’t taken enough time with your puppy. Puppy potty training takes constant and consistent attention on your part. But once the potty time is done, it’s party time, and you’ll be able to play with your puppy all day long.
