(Before It's News)

Big news in the bird academic publications front, as two venerable ornithological publications, The Condor and The Auk, have made most of the the last 15 years worth of issues available completely for free on their website. As pre-2000 articles are already freely available on the Searchable Ornithological Research Archive (SORA), this means that the entirety of the magazine’s articles through 2013, are available for free.

The Auk, formerly the journal of the American Ornithologists’ Union, and The Condor, formerly of the Cooper Ornithological Society, relaunched last year under new missions owing to the decision to publish the two journals jointly under a single publication office. The two journals are much more collaborative in their missions, with The Auk focusing on taxonomy and systemics and The Condor on conservation applications. Published continuously since 1884 and 1899, respectively, they’ve long been the most prestigious publications in their respective fields.

Now, with so much bird science made freely available, both researchers and hobby birders have a unique opportunity to explore. In fact, there’s no better field for this sort of free exchange of information, as ornithology remains one of the few scientific field in which amateurs have opportunities to make significant impacts on real science being done. And certainly, the results of such research has real impact on our hobby, from the way we make lists to conservation initiatives.

Thanks to the editors of The Auk and The Condor for their efforts to make the work of bird science available to all those interested in ornithology, professional and amateur.
